In a tax identity theft scheme, a scammer files a fraudulent tax return using another person’s social security number and receives the refund electronically. Often, the victim is unaware that they were the target of the scam until they file their tax return and the IRS notifies them that a return has already been filed in their name. If you have been victimized, the IRS will notify you and initiate an
investigation.
